On Monday, January 7, the Executive Planning Committee for the Arsenal of Democracy announced that it is planning a second flyover on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. for Friday, May 8, 2020. The event will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and the Pacific as well as honor the men and women of the “Greatest Generation.”
As part of a two-day celebration in the nation’s capital, the flyover will coincide with a ceremony for veterans at the National World War II Memorial, and will consist of a vast assortment of U.S. and Allied WWII aircraft flying overhead in 24 separate historically sequenced warbird formations. Nearly 100 vintage warbirds of various types are expected to participate.
“This will be one of the most unique gatherings of World War II vintage aircraft ever assembled,” said ICAS President John Cudahy. “And the backdrop of the National Mall and the National World War II Memorial on the 75th anniversary of VE Day will make it even more special.”

The planning committee consists of John Cudahy, President/CEO of the International Council of Air Shows; Pete Bunce, President/CEO of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association; Hank Coates, President/CEO of the Commemorative Air Force; Mike Ginter, Vice President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association; and Paul Rinaldi, President of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
